Tom McEnery has been a leader in shaping the growth of San Jose and Silicon Valley, a role that his father and both grandfathers also previously enjoyed. Elected as San Jose's 61st mayor in 1982, McEnery is credited for leading the rebirth of the city's downtown core with museums, hotels and the HP Pavilion, and elevating San Jose into the top tier of cities in the United States. He controlled sprawl and created a strong tax base.
McEnery remains active as a writer, public speaker and member of the ownership group of San Jose Sports & Entertainment Enterprises, which owns the San Jose Sharks. He has taught at Stanford and been a Presidential Scholar at Santa Clara University, and has written books and articles on urban politics, cities, and history; he edited and introduced his friend John Hume's autobiography, "A New Ireland".In the summer of 2011, he and his family are opening a local Pike's Market, the San Pedro Square Market. San Jose's McEnery Convention Center is named in his honor.
